READINGTON, NJ – The Readington Township Board of Health has amended its tobacco ordinance to align with state statutes regarding the sale of tobacco products, according to a release.

The state, according to the release, prohibits the sale of any tobacco products to those under age 21, and it specifically addresses the sale of vaping pens, which have been shown to attract and endanger minors. The township’s tobacco ordinance reflects this change.

As of Jan. 21, 2020, a press release from the state announced that there is a permanent ban on flavored vape products, with a goal of limiting exposure to electronic smoking devices, which have been shown to be appealing, especially for children, according to the release.

The township board of health is endorsing the state’s focus on discouraging vaping among youth, the release said.

There are programs designed to help individuals quit tobacco use, including by calling 1-866- NJ-STOPS, for those ages 18 and older. The American Lung Association and American Cancer Society also sponsor teen-focused programs called N-O-T (Not on Tobacco), also available online.

“It is the board of health’s mission to provide resources to aid those struggling with addiction, with the intent of improving public health in our community,” the board said in the release.
